"Our number one priority is company culture. Our whole belief is that if you get the culture right, most of the other stuff like delivering great customer service or building a long-term enduring brand will just happen naturally on its own."
- Tony Hsieh, CEO, Zappos
Culture is the critical ingredient that separates a successful firm from the failed ones. A start up may have a great idea and a very experienced team but if the culture does not bring it together then the odds of its success are very little. To use an analogy, culture is to an organisation what water is to fish: Pollute both and the results are disastrous. At Blubirch, we take deliberate efforts to create a culture of "Trust- Our core value".
We firmly believe that culture is not something we build devoid of the rest of the organization. Our culture reflects in everything we do from recruitment, recognition, assessment, to holding each other accountable. In summary, our culture is a sum total of all our processes. Aligning our processes to the culture is like aligning all the wheels of an automobile to move in the same direction.
Needless to say, we have had our hits and misses in creating this culture and we would be the last ones to say that we are done yet! This is a journey and the culture will continue to be tweaked at the edges, but we can safely say that the heart of our culture is and will remain focused on only ONE value - Trust. Additionally, our ten leadership principles ensure that every action we take is aligned to our core value of trust.
We firmly believe that competencies can be built but apathy towards fundamental leadership principles is an unbridgeable gap. We have deployed a continuous feedback tool to help our team seek and provide feedback. This gives an employee instantaneous and continuous feedback on how the rest of the team perceives his/her behavior with reference to leadership principles and value. We never miss out opportunities to share stories of how the team has lived up to the values or where we could have done better.
“A hallmark of a healthy creative culture is that its people feel free to share ideas, opinions, and criticisms. Lack of candour, if unchecked, ultimately leads to dysfunctional environments.”
- Ed Catmull, President, Pixar
So building and maintaining a culture requires that we lead by example and make no exception. We are ruthless in the way we maintain this culture. We have not shied away from asking people to leave, no matter how senior, when they have not lived up to our leadership values.
